RO® Tactical SATCOM Radio
The RO Tactical Radio provides end-users with a beyond line of site (BLOS) Iridium radio with ranges of 100-250 miles in a hand-held form factor. This capability ensures users operating in environments where traditional line of sight radios are ineffective, are now able to maintain critical Command and Control capabilities. When coupled to the RO-MAP PDA, users are capable of obtaining Situational Awareness information of other users on the net.
The RO Tactical Radio provides on-the-move (OTM), over-the-horizon secure voice and global position information in a handheld push-to-talk (PTT) communications device. The RO Radio utilizes the Distributed Tactical Communications System (DTCS) architecture and Iridium's low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites through the Defense Information Systems Agency's (DISA) Enhanced Mobile Satellite Service (EMSS). This architecture is capable of supporting up to 16 thousand individual nets each supporting one talker and unlimited listeners. All communications are secured with AES-256. Equipped with an embedded GPS receiver, each radio transmits and receives voice and GPS over a single antenna. Encrypted Position Location Information (PLI) is transmitted with flexible configurable options to meet operational requirements. These settings are available for two types of PLI transmissions: Global PLI and Regional PLI.
RO-Mobile Awareness Platform (RO-MAP.) The RO-MAP is a software application that runs on a PDA and provides vital Situational Awareness (SA) information quickly and reliably to the end-user. The RO-MAP utilizes the functionality of a PDA along with the beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) capability of the RO Tactical Radio to provide situational awareness and enhanced communication capabilities.
How it Works
The capability leverages Iridium's existing LEO satellite constellation to network multiple users under single satellite vehicles. This netted Iridium technology delivers a "point-to-multipoint" capability in a push-to-talk hand-held tactical radio, enabling users the ability to communicate at ranges exceeding 100 miles. The radio has an integrated commercial GPS; this coupled with the radio's ability to transmit both voice and data across the Iridium architecture, provides the added ability to deliver PLI Situational Awareness and textual data across the user Nets.
