Iditarod Trail Emergency Communication Equipment Sponsoring Project
GIT Satellite donated Iridium equipment and airtime, including handheld satellite telephones pagers, and data enabling kits, which were used to communicate with remote outposts along the 1,049-mile route from Anchorage to Nome. "Most of the Iditarod Trail is beyond the reach of landlines or cellular towers, and the satellite phones are the only way to keep in touch with these remote regions of Alaska," said Stan Hooley, executive director for the Iditarod. "The Iridium phones provide an important margin of safety and security for the mushers, volunteers, and the bush pilots supporting the Iditarod, enabling us to respond quickly to any emergency along the trail. It is the only communications available for several points along the Iditarod trail."
Sponsorship of Mailchimp’s Freddie Mercury Project
GIT assisted MailChimp in sending Freddie the monkey (Mailchimp mascot) to the top of the stratosphere and provided the equipment to allow receiving an email from 102,240 feet above the earth, using one of GIT’s 9522a satellite transceivers. The system was provided free of charge and was totally successful.
GIT Satellite Sponsored SatCom Solutions for World Record Balloon Flight
GIT Satellite provided the satellite communications solutions for the Two Eagles trans-Pacific balloon flight, which flew from Japan across the entire Pacific Ocean, to ensure safety and communication throughout the journey. The team used handheld Iridium satellite phones for voice communication as well as Inmarsat equipment for all data requirements.
NASA Glenn Research Center in association with the Ohio Aerospace Institute Balloon Flight
Similar to the Mailchimp balloon flight, GIT has volunteered Iridium equipment and airtime for a research flight where Engineering students learned firsthand the intricacies involved in telecommunications, programming, building, and construction of a high-altitude balloon payload. In preparation to an eventual CubeSat experiment of NASA’S CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI), which provides an opportunity for the design and testing of very small satellite payloads.
