Iridium Epoch Halftime Rollover Upcoming Time Event
Verify Proper Customer Application Usage of Iridium Time

Overview Iridium® is providing advisory information about the Iridium Time (IRT) epoch halftime event to ensure that customers’ use of Iridium Time in their applications will function properly at and after the upcoming halftime event on June 25, 2020 at 13:29.21 UTC. Additionally, Iridium is requesting customers complete a survey to assist verification of customers’ proper usage of Iridium Time as an unsigned 32-bit integer in user applications. During prior Iridium Halftime transitions, Iridium noted that some partners were using the IRT in a manner that might cause issues when signed instead of unsigned 32-bit integer variables are used.

This advisory is intended to be addressed by individuals within partner organizations with knowledge of the AT commands used within the partner’s Iridium application, and with knowledge of the solution's interaction with the Iridium network. Recipients are requested to share this information within their organization to the appropriate technical subject matter expert. Customers should complete the survey at at their earliest convenience. In the survey, customers are requested to verify whether their applications use the IRT variable in their user application and if so, whether it is used correctly as an unsigned integer to deal with half time, and whether the application will successfully deal with a 32 bit unsigned integer variable used to represent Iridium time.

Iridium 9523 New Product Announcement and End Of Life of Legacy Iridium 9523

This is a reminder that Iridium has announced the new version of the Iridium 9523 L-Band transceiver. This is a significant revision that takes advantage of a more sophisticated and integrated RF architecture.
The new Iridium 9523(N) L-Band transceiver has been designed to be a direct drop-in replacement for the current
9523 and thus not require partners to change or redesign any physical, electrical or logical interfaces in the
host solution.
The radio in the new Iridium 9523(N) L-Band transceiver has been updated and thus requires new FCC and IC identifications which are listed below. Iridium partners can begin to expect new Iridium 9523(N) L-Band
Transceivers in October of 2016 following exhaustion of inventory of the current product.

On 30 December 2014, Inmarsat will cease all services provided by Inmarsat B, including all GMDSS distress functionality from the terminal. We have agreed this cessation date with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

When Inmarsat B is retired, the service will have been in existence for over 20 years. Inmarsat made this decision based on information from channel partners and market assessments; in summary, this decision is principally driven by considerations around:

  • The vast majority of vessels with Inmarsat B will have reached the end of their economic life
  • Inmarsat B terminals are no longer available
  • Spares and service support are increasingly scarce for the Inmarsat B terminals
  • Three FleetBroadband (FB) variants are currently available and well established with global service
  • FleetBroadband offers a greatly enhanced proposition to end-users
  • Inmarsat intends to provide circuit- and packet-switched safety services on all FleetBroadband platforms

Over the coming years, Inmarsat will continue to transition Inmarsat B customers to the FleetBroadband platform where the introduction of GMDSS functionality is a priority.

Inmarsat M – Maritime: As communicated previously, Inmarsat M will also be retired on 30 December 2014.

Inmarsat advises that it will continue to support its ISATM2M service at least until December 2018. This provides long-term stability and guarantees that critical IsatM2M services, currently provided via the Inmarsat-3 constellation, can become available to all ISAT M2M customers until at least 2018 by allowing for IsatM2M services to be provided on the I4 satellites should the need arise. A transition from the current I3 satellites to the I4 satellites would be done by making changes to the network itself, and should not require any physical changes to existing terminals in the field.
